Salisbury Fire Deptartment Stations 1, 2, and 16 were dispatched to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment. Upon arrival, AC 2 (Scott) established command with light smoke showing. Initial reports from locals indicated no occupants in the building. Crews made entry, placed ground ladders, controlled utilities, and controlled the small grease fire quickly.
It was later determined the fire was a result of an individual living in a condemned apartment on the second floor cooking. The apartment had been condemned the week prior, and had no heat or electricity. The occupant had possibly utilized an extension cord to obtain power for cooking.
This event, while, happily, not life-threatening at the time, is a small example of how things are not always how they may initially appear and should serve as a reminder to all firefighters to be sure to expect the unexpected.
