Sunday, November 16, 2014

Retired Assistant Fire Chief Ed Hastings was honored on Sunday November 16, 2014 with good food and fellowship. Chief Hastings started as a Volunteer Firefighter for Station 2 and served from 1978-1982. Ed became a Career Firefighter in 1982. He was promoted to the rank of  Fire Training Lieutenant in January of 2000. He was promoted to Fire Captain in September of 2000 and promoted to Assistant Fire Chief in 2003. He retired in January of 2007 serving the City of Salisbury for a combined total of 29 years.

Chief Hastings came today to speak about the Salisbury Fire Department past, present, and future. He spoke about a Commercial Building Fire at Benjamin's Clothing Store, a motor vehicle crash with rescue on the Bypass and Snow Hill Road,  and a residential building fire on Winder Street.

The biggest changes during his service to the City of Salisbury were the switch from ten and fourteen hour shifts to twenty four hour shifts and the role of a Duty Chief transitioning from the front of a Engine to a Command Vehicle.

The Salisbury Fire Department thanks Retired Assistant Fire Chief Ed Hastings for his dedication and service to the City of Salisbury.
