SAFER Grant Employees Start There 2 Weeks Of Training - Salisbury Fire Department

October 23, 2012 marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Salisbury Fire Department’s rich history with the addition of twelve (12) new Firefighters/EMTs starting with the Department. With the assistance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (S.A.F.E.R.) was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase the number of trained, "front line" firefighters available in their communities. The goal of S.A.F.E.R. is to enhance the local fire Departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response, and operational standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Thanks to the SAFER grant, our community will get the benefit of having a closed station reopen to its previous staffing level, as well as increasing staffing throughout the Department over the next two (2) years. Never before in the history of the Department has there been 12 Firefighter/EMTs hired at the same time and all starting on the same day. All 12 firefighters will go through 2 weeks of intense training that will introduce them to the City and Department’s policies, procedures and emergency operations. On November 6, 2012 at 7:00pm, the Department will conduct a swearing-in ceremony to honor the accomplishments of the 12 new employees. This ceremony will be held at the Salisbury Fire Department’s Administrative Headquarters located at 325 Cypress Street, Salisbury, Maryland. The public is strongly encouraged to attend.
