SFD Honors Retired Fire Chief Bill Higgins

Retired Fire Chief William Higgins was honored on Sunday September 21, 2014. Chief Higgins was a Police Officer for the Town of Seaford from 1959-1980. He became the Salisbury Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief in 1980. He was promoted to the rank of Fire Chief in 1992. He retired in 2000 serving the City of Salisbury for 20 years.

Chief Higgins came today to speak about three of his peronsal heroes;

Retired SFD Chaplin Harvey Dixon; became the first Chaplin for the SFD in 1973 and served the SFD, City of Salisbury, Wicomico County and  Maryland State Firemen Association until 2002. Chaplin Dixon responded directly to the Pentagon and World Trade Center incidents after 911. He attended/ served in various capacities as Chaplin with 150 firefighter funerals in the United States in his term as SFD Chaplin.

Robert Cannon; Businessman, Attorney, and Delegate. Mr. Cannon served the Salisbury Fire Department with his personal support as a community member. He ensured the SFD members were supprted during the Salisbury Festival, Labor Day, and Christmas season. Mr. Cannon was awarded the Fire Commissioner helmet in 2004 by Deputy Chief Tim Keenan.

Doug Brown; Firefighter for the SFD. Doug served as a Volunteer Firefighter for two years and a Career Firefighter for 22 years. He was awarded the Firehouse Magazine "Medal of Valor" in 1987 for the rescue of children at the Eastern Shore Drive house fire.
